Watercolour Birds Original Art

“Moments spent with tawny frogmouths, blue wrens, and kookaburras have kindled a lasting fascination. Each bird was first photographed by me before being translated into art.” —Heidi
These original drawings were created using a selection of fountain pens with high quality inks and water colours on 300gsm A3 sized Windsor and Newton paper. All watercolor artworks are also available in art prints of different sizes.
Among them is the iconic Kookaburra, one of Australia’s most beloved native birds. Its original Wiradjuri name, guuguubarra, comes from an onomatopoeia of its unmistakable laughing call—a sound so distinctive it later evolved into the English name Kookaburra. This call, often heard at sunrise and sunset, earned the bird its nickname, the “Bushman’s Clock.”
This laughing Kookaburra, drawn in watercolour, is one of five species found across the Australian bush. Though part of the kingfisher family, kookaburras don’t hunt fish. Instead, they feast on insects, reptiles, amphibians, and occasionally small mammals—all creatures that share the shelter of eucalyptus forests with them.
